Help me Rhonda

As featured on the BBC

Lying in the shadows of the Rhonda Valley, some 12 miles North of Cardiff is one of the UKs most historic lidos.

Excitingly for eibe Play and its managing director Paul Redden, it is about to undergo a massive restoration. The Grade II listed Lido in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, Pontypridd is the recipient of huge funding (over £6m) from the likes of the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, plus a contribution from Cadw.

“We are thrilled to be involved with a restoration scheme of this magnitude,” says Redden, “We’ll be working in conjunction with leading construction company Kier Construction Limited who will lead the extensive project. The new Lido will be great for the local community, creating jobs and a feel good factor around the town; long-term it will attract a hoard of visitors to Ponty!”

eibe’s involvement, an important complementary part of the Lido restoration, will be a new play area, designed and constructed by our expert team. Drawing on opinion and ideas from neighbourhood schoolchildren, eibe will create a pioneering playspace that kids of all ages can enjoy for decades.

“South Wales will have a major tourist attraction,” adds Redden, “Indeed our playground will act as a significant pull in its own right with a myriad of great equipment and play products.”

A Rhondda Cynon Taf council leader enthused: “This project, coupled with the massive regeneration project in the town centre itself along with other public and private sector investment programmes means that Pontypridd is benefiting from the largest cash injection in its history.

“The refurbished Lido will create a regional tourist attraction bringing tens of thousands of visitors to Pontypridd. It will also create jobs directly in the Lido itself, and have economic benefits for local businesses. Summer 2015 is the date in everyone’s diary when the new look Lido will open its doors for the first time.
